I have been following the singer and songwriter, Melanie Martinez since the very beginning of my middle school days. What fascinated me about her was not only her talent in music but also her unique aesthetic. She takes romantic ideas of childhood and perverts it.
Last year she released her “K-12” album, where she expands upon the musical universe she created with her persona/character, Crybaby. The EP she released just a few days ago adds onto the narrative she developed. While I can talk about the music, I feel it is more fitting to talk about the artistic directions she takes. She has a distinctive, retro-esque, cherub-like, but yet horrifying style, and there are several design elements she employs to emphasize this. She employs a simple color palette with animal motifs found in children’s media. Clothing is also critical in establishing her style, with frills and romantic style dresses adorning the characters.
(she is so unique and cool)
