As we are drafting our final proposals for the Intervention in Public Space, I was thinking about the impact that art had on society. How do we even measure the impact? On the surface level, art serves to question, makes us think, communicate ideas, and enact change. But how do we quantify the impact that it can have? One novel idea that I thought about was considering the audience. Who was the artist trying to reach? Sometimes, it can be n=1 or even 0. However, I think most artists that are creating “interventions” in public spaces are doing it to make the people around their location think, question, or wonder. Especially with the advent of technology, digital and video forms of art can be accessed all around the world. I still don’t think there is a clear way to measure impact. Nonetheless, I ask myself these questions when evaluating impact. How successful was the artist in reaching their intended audience? Was the message clear for the audience to understand?

I think the only one who can truly measure the impact/success of the work is the artist his/herself. They are the ones who knew that the original message was and what they wanted to achieve, so they are the only ones who can quantify the result. Everyone else can have their own interpretation, but at the end of the day the artist determines their own success.
