With the making of Get Back, the new Beatles Documentary, I felt inspired to write this blog. The Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is one of the most iconic album covers of all time. It radically changed the way people thought about what an album cover is. Sgt. Peppers album cover depicts the band surrounded by images of famous people in history. Previous to this album, a cover served a more utilitarian purpose – it acted as a protective layer for the vinyl and acted almost like an advertisement rather than a standalone piece of art work. Sgt. Pepper’s lack of typography and emphasis on both the band and their surroundings, which most albums at the time didn’t have, makes it a standalone piece of art. Its art style mimicking Dada was also revolutionary for albums at the time.
There’s a lot more to dive in with this album so if you’re interested, check out this really interesting and in depth article
