With tools like Adobe Photoshop and Procreate, animating 2D or 3D films is easier than ever; even I, as an inexperienced designer and artist, can scour the Internet to create a piece somewhat interesting. Yet all of this modern technology had to start somewhere.

In the 20th century, Disney was indubitably the most famous studio in the movie animation world, revolutionizing the world of movies and technology alike. To create their famous animated films, including Snow White (1937), the studio created the multiplane camera, which allowed animators to move elements of different distances from the camera past one another, creating a three-dimensional sense of depth.

It’s really cool how creative the first animators were! One of the tricks that I’ve always found super interesting was the “squash and stretch” where animators distort characters in a few frames when they move so the character looks more dynamic!
