As I finally got around to watching The Social Dilemma, it led to to considering the question of the purpose designs hold. It was raised in the Speculative Everything piece we read, but this documentary further emphasized the power designs have. When social media intentionally uses systems similar to gambling and prioritizes colors that invoke specific emotions, should they be justified by the potential connectivity that they bring? Such targeted designs have had incomparable impacts on our society, but do they possess too much power?

I haven’t gotten around to watching the Social Dilemma yet, but I am definitely intrigued from the trailer and your questions. As a student studying marketing, how much research goes into influencing psychology definitely scares me at times. It really shows you how design and psychology has melded together to serve corporate goals.

For sure, and I wonder what the future will hold in terms of regulations and emergence of new technology. We might be seeing a whole redefinition of privacy.
