A while back, I read some articles linked in this Instagram post about the rise and fall (and rise?) of translucent technology and products/accessories. Studio Cult is a brand that makes quirky statement jewelry and accessories, much of which is very “internet-trendy” (think a giant bread clip-shaped bag, frozen cursor & “sensitive content” enamel pins, Adobe PS/Illustrator tool-shaped earrings, etc), but their social media and blog also feature interesting posts about trends in the art and fashion worlds–highly recommend checking it out! This post in particular documented the trendiness of clear technology/being able to see all the wires/circuits and brings up the point that part of the origin of this ‘trend’ was a technological redesign for items to be allowed in prisons. Definitely an illuminating piece that further emphasizes the influence of society/the real world/functionality/design as a purpose-driven process on art.
