When I was reading the chapter of Speculative Everything, I was reminded of an exhibition I visited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art last Winter. The exhibition was called “Designs for Different Futures” (I’ve linked a page with images of some of the featured artworks). It featured designs that responded to current problems and how they could be addressed in the future, or imagined solutions to problems that haven’t even occurred yet, but might be of concern in the future. An example of a more practical, but very innovated design is Petit Pli—Clothes That Grow, designed 2017 by Ryan Mario Yasin. The garments were constructed with the idea that they could grow along with children as they grow. One design that seems a bit more speculative is Raising Robotic Natives, designed 2016 by Stephan Bogner, Philipp Schmitt, and Jonas Voigt, essentially a mechanical arm that could feed a baby in a crib.
