Recently, I read an article about ex-Apple designer Sir Jony Ive getting hired by Ferrari to help the long-standing automative company design electrical vehicles. Jony Ive took leadership of Apple’s design team back in 1996 and has been a critical factor behind Apple’s success. He worked on numerous products, including the iMac, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch.

Personally, I think its interesting that design is a space that touches every industry as companies need to consistently make deliberate choices behind how to design/market their products. While I was initially surprised that Ferrari chose someone who has lots of experience in technology and almost zero work in the automative industry, it makes sense – why should Ferrari not push their boundaries and allow someone with outside perspectives to lead them into the future? Ive has had a lot of success at Apple, and he should not be holed into working on tech products, regardless of how good he is. Designers have the freedom to explore and work on anything that interests them.
