This painting by Rene Magritte from 1929 is interesting and is an iconic Surrealist piece of work that creates a three-way paradox. In the image, Magritte has painted a pipe followed by the words “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” which means “This is not a pipe” in French. That is because this is in fact a painting and an image of a pipe, but not a pipe itself. In making works likes this Magritte hoped to overthrow the oppressive rationalist bourgeois society.
