On November 12, Taylor Swift released her first short film which was based on the extended version of her song All Too Well from her rerecorded Red album, released the same day. The song, and therefore the short film, chronicles a brief but completely devastating relationship from Swift’s past. The motif of memory is emphasized not only with the lyrics where she cites specific memories from the relationship and sings how she remembers it “all too well,” but also with many of Swift’s visual design choices in the film. The costume design for the actors Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink seem to be inspired by more vintage fashion trends, including Sink’s argyle brown sweater, giving the film a very nostalgic feel. Furthermore, the film was shot on 35mm gauge film which gives the film a grainy texture and rounded edges, emphasizing that the events occurring in the film are memories rather than actively occurring events. Taken together, I believe that Swift did an incredible job at delivering the core thematic elements of her already beautiful song in a visual media.
