Procreate is a digital art application designed for the iPad. Until recently, it has been exclusively for 2D art, but with the release of the 5.2 update, it now allows users to paint on 3D models. With this 3D addition, certain brushes in the app now have textures that can alter the models appearance in 3D. Users cannot yet make their own 3D models, but they can paint pre-made models. Procreate comes with about six 3D models that users have the option to download and paint, but it is compatible with all OBJ, USD, and USDZ file types. Additionally, users can put their painted objects in different environments, alter the lighting, and even use the iPad’s camera to put their object in their environment. I personally have had a lot of fun with this new update and it is a great way for a new digital artist like myself who only has experience in 2D art dip their toes in the world of 3D model work.
