As part of their Spring Event, Apple unveiled its new iMacs that come in seven different colors. Upon hearing news of this, I was more interested in how Apple chose color to begin with. The 7 colors you see today are all thanks to the companies’ illustriously discrete design team (who apparently rarely take group photos and individual members’ names are kept private). The team goes through many variations of colors and has prototypes that are mocked up in 64 different shades. Some designers are dedicated solely to analyzing color for Apple’s products. The process is thorough all the way down to the factory line where they have special light boxes that check to ensure that the color is still consistent on the prototypes. However, the most interesting insight throughout the articles I read was how color is making its way back into mainstream culture and people are moving away from minimalist colors. This “Minimalism is Dead” speaks about this movement as well. Even as a person who doesn’t follow tech news much, I knew that this Apple release was different and would have a domino effect on other industries with this new wave of design. So I wonder which companies will follow suit and embrace color as the new trend.
