I’ve been revisiting a lot of old comfort movies recently, one of which is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. I’ve loved the movie for a long time now, and am always captivated by the beautiful imagery and imaginative storytelling that del Toro manages to create within his films.
After watching the movie, I decided to do some digging and read more about del Toro’s creative process. One resource that really stuck out to me was an exhibit at the LACMA from 2016 titled “Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters”. Though the exhibit is no longer showing, the LACMA website hosts an archive of absolutely beautiful images from del Toro’s journals. I loved going through the images and examining the creative process of an artist whose artistry really tugs at something that’s occult and horrifying, yet with an almost innocently dream-like.
