In 2008, the World Wildlife Fund and Yoshiyuki Mikami created a campaign using photos of endangered species where every pixel represented one animal left in the wild. More recently, Joshua Smith, a programmer, released a new series with updated figures (sourced from the Animal Planet endangered species list). These images are powerful in displaying the urgency of protecting endangered species, and forcing audiences to reflect. This perhaps is something that facts and numbers may not be able to achieve.

This is so cool yet saddening at the same time – one thing I’m curious to see is if they have video timelines for these. For example, assuming they have the data for the past decade(s), could they create a frame/video animation to show the population change over time? That might even give us a bigger shock factor, as we’d visibly see the change over time.
