I’m currently taking CIS460 (Computer Graphics) and our final project is to recreate Minecraft from scratch.  In my typical fashion, instead of revisiting lecture material or things that will help me build the project, I decided to hop back 10 years and redownload the game.

It’s wild how a game with such “low quality” graphics (I put low quality in the sense that everything is made to look pixelated) can still produce realistic images.  For example, you may have heard of Penncraft (a group of students who recreated Penn’s campus in Minecraft), which garnered national attention.

It’s one thing to look at a video of it, but another to actually join the server and walk through it.  You’ll notice that there’s incredible detail and thought in the buildings, including the plaques, indentations, and lighting.  If you have the time and have it installed, I definitely recommend hopping on and giving it a tour!  You may even visit parts of (virtual) campus that you otherwise wouldn’t have seen!

Wow, everything is so detailed. I cannot imagine how long it took Penncraft to recreate our campus. It’s definitely very nostalgic looking at all the buildings again.

I was obsessed with Minecraft as a child (until my brother “accidentally” burned down all my cat houses and I cried for like 2 hours). I love how collaborative of a creative space it is.
