Before I watched the Susan Kare video/started working on the hyperlocal icons project, I had never consciously judged my experience with the weather app icons on my phone. After watching her speak on the characteristics of good icons, I’ve realized that a lot of the time I don’t know what the icons mean for the different weathers. Last night there was a hail storm and I saw the icon below– I realized that without the label (and some context clues), I wouldn’t have known what weather to expect.
I thought this was funny because Susan Kare was definitely right: icons need a balance between simple and clear. I don’t know if I just haven’t spent the time to recognize each of the icons, or if specific weathers don’t happen enough, but I’m glad I finally recognized the inconvenience (in my opinion) of some of the weather icons.

I’ve always thought that the icons (especially the iPhone icons) were really intriguing! They’re so simple in design, yet you recognize it so quickly – as if they’re the “brand” name for icons. It’s interesting to think about what icons today would be like if Susan Kare did not produce the majority of Apple’s logos.
