With all the emphasis on WFH and software that empowers people to work/collaborate/study remotely, office spaces seem to have been forgotten. They genuinely seem to be a very avoidable cost – especially seeing how teams and companies are able to function just as well remotely. It is also an incredibly weird time for such a paradigm shift as we have recently seen an absurd surge in spending on office campuses and even startups like weWork. So do offices still serve any purpose?
I did a bit of reading and came across many interesting articles. The articles all focused on how office spaces need to adapt not just on a practical level with Covid, but also on the purpose they serve in people’s lives. Offices used to be solely designed for productivity. That was the only purpose it served for people. It’s crazy to think they’ve transitioned into movie theatres, playgrounds, and gym facilities. It’s even crazier to think about how they will continue to evolve. The question still stands to me – is this just a marketing stunt, or does all this focus on creating community through office spaces truly result in increased output for the company.

Very interesting thoughts! I personally like working in shared spaces, as fitness and food services are close, but I also generate better ideas when around a community. Some of the questions you pose here remind me of some of the points made in the Speculative Everything reading from this week. We should be designing for today and the future. It will be interesting to see how work spaces develop with time.
