Next Friday, Feb 12th 2021 is Chinese Lunar New Year!! My parents visited and dropped off some red envelopes as part of our tradition of celebrating Chinese New Year as a Taiwanese family and I was prompted to think about all the red envelopes I have collected over the years and the meanings behind their designs. They can range from very minimalistic to complex intricate designs, more traditional to more modern, paper to fabric, with a plethora of different characters and illustrations. See below!
Animals are always a popular option: Corresponding to the zodiac year. This new year is the year of the ox! How cute are these cartoon oxen?
Surnames! These characters represent family last names and make the envelope very personal.
Sayings for good fortune, health, prosperity, etc. Because everyone wants that, right?! 😛
Different materials – paper, fabric, some even sustainable :O
And other beautiful designs!!! Branching away from “red” envelopes. The embossing on these are so stunning.

I’ll be celebrating the New Year with my family later this week, and it’s always really interesting to see the designs! Some of them focus more on the text and message, whereas others contain either traditional images like flowers, fish, good luck charms while others feature comical, graphic designs.
