Ok I know I’ve talked a lot about monuments, but the importance of monuments made me think about all the confederate monuments that were taken down, protested, or vandalized in response to the death of George Floyd and the continuing black lives matter movement. It’s interesting to consider how monuments serve as periodic markers of what or who a community or nation finds important at one time or another. In the case of many confederate monuments they were made of brass and other heavy metals, they are hard to get rid of, and they weren’t made to break down. As some of the project outline explained that our monuments did not have to last after filming, these statues were certainly not made with ephemerality in mind.
