One of the more interesting moments in music this year was when the superstar rapper Travis Scott successfully pulled off the first ever Fortnite performance. The team digitized Travis (likely pulling from his action figure designed by Dan Chung) and through motion tracking recorded a version of him performing his famous songs. I found this to be a breakthrough for digital design as a relatively harmless game became a stage for a multi-million dollar grossing concert. Another dimension of digital design may have been unlocked for the future, as artists may continue to find ways to provide real performers a platform to deliver through virtual versions of themselves (rather than simply making digital movies like traditional video games).

I remember a young cousin of mine being really invested in this. I think it’s a super cool way to bridge the gap between previously common behaviors and covid realities. It also makes concerts and things of that nature more accessible to those that usually cannot afford to see them.
