The NBA recently released their new slate of jerseys for the players and naturally fans voiced their opinion. As they transition to more tech-infused jerseys, the focus has remained on using vibrant colors where applicable to appeal to fans (large amount of revenue is brought in from jersey sales). Unfortunately for the Brooklyn Nets, their new jerseys were not as well received. Inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat, the design was met by fans claiming they were “designed by children scribbling.” Though I don’t believe the design was outstanding compared to some others, it made me wonder whether famous artists’ designs can still hold value when imitated in the future. In this case, a bridge was built between the NBA and contemporary art and the fame of Basquiat did not overtake immediate reactions. I personally believe more experiments should take place, as more opportunities can be created for artists to no longer be restricted to galleries or genres dictated to better sell their art.
