So I just saw Queen’s Gambit and that is an amazing show! I highly recommend it! I love how they portray women where her most admirable trait is her intelligence and how she doesn’t depend on men. The acting and cinematography is so good.
The outfits are gorgeous and I appreciate how the TV show uses fashion as a plot device. When Beth is living in the orphanage, she only had one outfit but as she gets older, her clothes are lavishly indicating the importance of clothing for her character. Additionally, she gets made fun of for her discounted and out of style clothing in school.
Another interesting aspect is that Beth is usually the only female in a very male-dominate sport and she dresses very feminine. It is plays a strong contrast to her environment.
The pictures above show the clothes resembling chess boards where the costume designer is indicating that chess is beyond a game for Beth and occurs in her real life as well.
