As my public intervention team is finalizing our idea, I decided to look for some references in the space of light art. Here are several art pieces I found most inspiring.
Anthony McCall’s split second
This piece wraps the view inside this cocoon of light. The amazing part of the piece is the brilliant cooperation between the ground neon light with the 2D projection of such shape on the top, creating an even stronger presence for the light and how you are immersed in such space without feeling trapped.
Newsubstance’s spectra pavilion
I have personally walked in this amazing 7-story pavilion at Coachella. The most impressive part is beautifully crafted color gradient together with the slope gradient. Also, the structure is visually appealing both in the day and night, considering Coachella is a festival across day and night. At day, the unique colorful pixel glass takes in light from the outside, and at night the whole structure is light up from the inside, providing two sets of experience.
James Turrell’s ganzfeld
This set of work manipulates the perspective lines so well that it creates a loss of depth in our perception. It’s interesting to think about the nature of light from this angle. We utilized light in 3D model rendering to generate a sense of 3D on the 2D screen, and the project opens up another way around: how we could manipulate light’s characteristic in the 3D space and thus transform the space.
Olafur Eliasson’s One-way color tunnel
This might be the most relevant piece to our team’s project. The structure is amazing, utilizing the idea of modular triangles along with the application of gradient and color. But the more fascinating part is how he used mirror with see-through glass that made the tunnel when walking from one side, you will see the tunnel as completely black, while from the other side, it looks like a multicolored kaleidoscope.
