This article explores an excerpt from Sean Adam’s book, How Design Makes Us Think, which explores how viewers respond to certain visual cues. The article argues that humor is a necessary component to convey serious and controversial messages, which reminded me of the artist presentation on Guerrilla Girls and how they use humor in their artwork so that people will be more accepting of their message. In class we discussed whether using humor was a way of sending a message in a more “polite” way and if it was truly more effective. Do you agree that humor allows artists to better communicate complex messages or are does it simply raise concerns in a less confrontational manner and distract from the key issue? This might also be something to consider as we work on our intervention projects.
