I browse YouTube a lot, and one of my favorite creators is Mark Rober. For those who don’t know him, he’s a former NASA and Apple engineer who’s now creating videos showcasing the intersection of design and engineering. Specifically, he creates cool inventions that both break records and improve social wellbeing. For example, he’s created glitter bomb traps to help catch porch pirates, powder to purify swamp water, and automatic bullseye boards, among others.
If you watch the whole “Glitter Bomb” series, it’s super cool to see how he built the invention. There’s a lot of design that comes into play – not simply aesthetics design, but also functional design. Does adding this part to the invention bring any additional benefits? How does it affect the overall balance of the invention?
As we begin working on the Intervention project, it’d be interesting to consider how our designs would interact with the public not only from an aesthetics standpoint, but also from a functional perspective. What do y’all think of Mark’s inventions? Curious to hear from you all!
