I wanted to share this brief film on Firelei Báez’s artwork and the message she conveys about Caribbean history and the depiction of the female form. I think much of what she says about power relationships and how through her artwork, she is able to rewrite the narrative and retake control of the situation is really important. She depicts constant shifts in power in her work and she changes our perception of something that is typically undesirable to something that is beautiful. She states that we all have the power to create something new and reframe narratives and even though it may be tiring, the possibilities are limitless. I think her final message is especially applicable to our current project with Photoshop as we are taking separate elements and combining them into something new and meaningful. https://art21.org/watch/new-york-close-up/firelei-baez-an-open-horizon-or-the-stillness-of-a-wound/
