Amazon's new headquarters is part of a larger trend to rethink office space as more community-focused culture center than a space where your desk is.

I know I just wrote about office design – I am sorry for another one. I am actually just so intrigued by what they’re going to transition to – along with cities like New York and SF. I also do think that this is probably the most influential time for them – sort of an inflection point of sorts. I recently came across this article, and this had me thinking about not just office spaces but schools, parks, and cities.

Focus on community, communal spaces, gatherings, collaborative environments. All these buzzwords being used to describe the future of the office. What about schools? Are our lecture halls designed for community and collboration? I really don’t think so. The were designed for productivity, and peak performance for students.

Will we see such a tectonic shift in universities and schools? Why not? Penn’s biggest asset is its community. We all learnt that through the pandemic. Is our campus really the most conducive place for this?

Not entirely sure – just a lot of thoughts wrestling in my head.
