Amani Lewis is a Baltimore-based artist that is known for her unique collage work. I have followed her work since 2019 when her Negroes in Trees work (the featured image of this post) went viral online. She uses a variety of mediums including fabric, magazines, and digital tools/art to make her collages.
It spoke to me its ability to speak to the beauty of the African American experience rather than black suffering and trauma which often is the focal point of a lot of black art that tis given recognition. Instead, it portrays black joy and beings without that social pressure. Of course, some of her works do speak to the larger social struggles of the African American experience, but I appreciate the duality.
This type of abstraction helped me with my own Dada Composite to remind me not to limit myself with the type of images I want to portray and the ability to distort the images I have to my liking.

Love the way she distorts the image through breaking them up into several smaller parts with different filters. Was very interesting to hear how they influenced your artwork as well. Thanks for sharing!
