As an avid gamer, I am always fascinated by the creativity of game designer as well as the bold artistic decisions they made. In a game, the design and the rendering of the characters and environment serves as an important bridge between the game’s interactive component and the individual player. Based on different storylines of the games and their underlying messages, the game designer would make different artistic decisions when creating a graphical representation of their characters. Here is a few examples of how design choices made by gaming artists enhance the visual narrative of a game.

Você pode jogar Overwatch de graça até janeiro - Drops de Jogos
Overwatch is a first-person multiplayer shooter game by Blizzard. The storyline of the game is about how an international task forced of superheros, the Overwatch League, attempts to restore order to earth by fighting again a terrorist group called Talon. Within the game, artists employs realistic renderings to produce lifelike characters in a futuristic world.
Little Nightmares II for Nintendo Switch - Nintendo
My Little Nightmare II is a horror adventure game where the the main protagonist Mono, “me” within the game, undergoes a series of adventures to save Six, the little girl in the yellow raincoat who was held hostage by a masked hunter in the Signal Tower, and discovering his own identity along the process. Just like the title of the game, the designers creates an eerie atmosphere within the game by creating a world that is often dark and gloomy and illustrate the innocence of the characters by depicting them in a cartoon like fashion that is often found in animated films.
The Messenger Review
The Messenger is a Player vs. Environment game that employs a retro design that reflects the look of arcade games in the 1980s and 1990s. The main plot of the game is about how a ninja attempts to deliver a scroll to the top of a mountain so that he could defeat the Demon King; the retro look of the game fits well with the classical “becoming a hero” storyline of the game.

Video game design is something that’s interested me for a long time – not necessarily a space I want to end up in career-wise, but something I greatly admire. Beautiful games leave me in awe, and even though my standard for which games count as beautiful are pretty low (I’m easy to impress!), the graphics, detail, and designs in games from Monument Valley to Bioshock are gorgeous and leave me stunned all the time.
