Maika Elan is a Vietnamese documentary photographer. I came across her work while doing research for a presentation in my photography class. I’m most drawn to her project called The Pink Choice, where she captures the daily lives of gay couples in Vietnam. The photos seek to show the beauty in the everyday lives of ordinary Vietnamese citizens. Since Vietnam is a country with few rights afforded to the LGBT+ community, Maika strives to make her audience empathize and relate with her photos. In addition, I’m interested in the way Maika utilizes bright primary colors to enhance her composition and convey her message.
Below are some photos from The Pink Choice.
