A recent study – conducted by Pascal Cotte – of Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ has discovered evidence of a charcoal sketch beneath its painted surface. The underdrawing is likely to be created using the spolvero technique, a method where holes are poked along the sketch and powdered charcoals are dusted from above to transfer the sketch onto the canvas. Cotte discovered marks of the spolvero technique from the lighter painted areas of the art piece. He even discovered potential traces of sketched hairpins, which can lead us to question the hairstyle at the time of the portrait’s creation.
