A creative album design for the Kpop phenomenon “Shinee,” which resembles a tape.

For Kpop fans, albums released by their favorite groups and solo artists are more than just CDs. Albums are a way of not only showing support for one’s favorite musicians, but also a way for fans to build up their personal collections.

Kpop albums typically include various collectibles in addition to the standard CD. Some examples are assorted photo cards, stickers, postcards, and even slots in fansigns (events where fans can meet their favorite artists in-person). Because Kpop songs often have a central concept or theme, albums are designed to embody those main ideas.

Here are some artists’ albums that are favored amongst fans to have the best designs and execution!

1. Oh My Girl

Oh My Girl’s Nintendo Gameboy-inspired packaging ties into their unique retro song concept.

2. NCT Dream

NCT Dream’s packaging for their album “Hot Sauce” resembles a literal food package, with everything from the material itself to a “nutrition facts” label on the backside.

3. Jeon Soyeon

Jeon Soyeon’s innovative album packaging resembles a fast food takeout box.

4. Wendy

Wendy’s album packaging includes real, pressed flowers encased in resin.

5. Exo

Exo’s design for their album The War: The Power of Music resembles comic book elements, with even actual pages of comics inside.

Thank you for sharing! It’s definitely very interesting to see the way album designs differ between artists and the ways they choose to express their music visually. Since I have roommates who are all very into kpop and like to display posters and photo cards around the dorm, it was nice to read about how something in my daily life is connected to this course. A mini album cover I personally also found visually appealing is Seventeen’s Your Choice – would suggest checking it out as well!
