Globally, several religions have different clothing or jewelry signatures that have become tradition. In Christianity for example, the Cross is an important aspect that represents the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Overtime, the Cross has become an integral part of the church, especially the Catholic Church. In current times, it is norm to see non-Christians wear a necklace or any piece of jewelry with the Cross as it has sort of become more a fashion statement outside the church. In the Islamic religion for example, some women choose to wear the hijab, a head covering that signifies modesty and morality in Islam. In recent times, due to the discomfort of having to wear both and hijab under other pieces of clothing like hoodies, there have been creative ideas to re-invent clothing to be more accommodating. Similar to the Cross, in recent times, some people–especially non-Muslim women–wear this clothing as a “fashion statement” with very little to no regard for the origin.
Some fashion designers, without much research or sanctions, have incorporated hijabs in their presentation or lines regardless of the model’s religion. However, the lives of muslim women are still at risk on the daily. Non-muslims are able to wear head coverings and hijabs because it is their job as models, however, people in government claim to be terrified at the sight of a woman practicing her religion. So much so that lawmakers are now imposing bans to prevent such women from participating in competitive sports.
Clothing continues to play an important role in religion, and given the vast variety of religions that exist today, the bare minimum we could do as a society is to create a welcoming environment that allows and respects each religion. It is irrational for people to be allowed to wear religious clothing as a preference, while sanctions are placed on people for simply practicing their religion.
