These sneakers typically start around $500 but can go all the way up to almost $800. The extremely high prices for these sneakers has led to a fair amount of controversy. In this Vox article, the author talks about how people have accused Golden Goose of “fetishizing poverty” for making intentionally scratched and dirtied sneakers so expensive. The company maintains that this appearance is solely meant to “pay homage to the West Coast’s skater culture.”
Regardless of what people are saying about the shoes, it has become abundantly clear that they are wildly popular. In September of 2018, the “Superstar taped sneaker” sold out at Nordstrom. I am most interested in knowing what consumers like so much about the design of these sneakers. Or, are people buying them simply because they are trendy and serve as a status symbol?
