The Power of Black and White

Color sets tone. Color establishes importance. Color invokes interest. Color is a critical aspects of visual design, photography, and art. Interesting, monochrome designs, photography, and art do not detract from the tone, importance, interest, or visual appeal of a visual artwork.

For example, in the image above, the overall message of youth, beauty, and life is not detracted with the absence of color in the lefthand image. In a sense, while colorful images are able to tell a story, black and white is able to introduce a newfound area of the image. Specifically, monochrome colors are able to evoke a more emotional image and add both mystery, drama, and allow the image to become open to interpretation.

“Colour may show the actuality of a scene while black and white is a perception of the captured reality.”

In short, there is value to black and white and colored photos alike. While modern technology has evolved to allow for colored images to be taken, the power, importance, and imagination that is ingrained in monochrome images cannot be dismissed.
