Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly advanced, and as its capabilities increase, so does its potential applications. Recently, machine intelligence has creeped into the music industry. A couple years ago, Intel used artificial intelligence to create the official beat of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The AI was trained with numerous pieces of music about sports, Japanese culture, and more.

More recently, I read an article about a music engine that can compose songs on the fly to fit videos. This got me thinking about the future of the music industry. Will AI replace musicians entirely? I’m not so sure. The humanity behind music is essential, but it is possible that we cannot tell the difference between machines and humans in the distant future. I guess that goes to Alan Turing’s ‘imitation game,’ but that is a thought for another day.

The gaming industry has already been exploring artificially generated music reacting to real-time events (Untitled Goose Game, for example), and it’s really cool to see. I highly doubt it’ll ever replace humans in the music industry, though. That’s basically half the plot of the anime Carole & Tuesday, and human talent did end up winning lol
