Sustainable packaging is packaging that is sourced and developed in a way that is environmentally friendly and does not contribute to pollution or the depletion of natural resources. As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, more consumers have begun to push for their favorite brands to adopt more ethical and sustainable manufacturing methods and reduce their climate footprint. In response, a growing number of brands are switching from plastic to more sustainable materials. Back in January, Princess Polly, a clothing company based in Australia, partnered with The Better Packaging Co. to create 100% compostable packaging which includes compostable labels and stickers. In honor of National Recycling Day, e.l.f Beauty announced its Project Unicorn initiative which was launched to streamline its product packaging in an effort to reduce plastic waste by removing secondary cartons, vacuum-formed trays, and paper insert cards, etc. One of the most interesting takeaways from these big companies is that by taking steps towards a greener world, both companies have improved the overall look and feel of their products. The rise in popularity of sustainable packaging is thus not only serving its larger purpose in the environmental sphere but expanding the innovative space for design.

One form of sustainable packaging I’ve seen is boxed water. Although they seem pretty cool and quirky, they are also pretty overpriced in most places. It would be nice to find more boxed water at prices comparable to regular bottled water.
