Minecraft 1.18 - Latest Snapshot Focuses on Biomes Again | gamepressure.com

The new Minecraft 1.18 update is coming out in 2 days, and it’s a complete re-haul of the old world generation. Mountains are steeper, caves are deeper, and every biome generally looks a lot more realistic and unpredictable. Designing an algorithm to produce a perfect balance between the core Minecraft blocky aesthetic and more realistic terrain and biomes is certainly no easy feat, and after having checked out a developer’s explanation of the new generation, it’s hard not to appreciate the amount of effort and thought put into the automatic generation. The biomes are decided with a 5-dimensional noise map of different attributes, such as temperature, distance from water, precipitation, and others, and after months and months of programming and tweaking the noise, the generation looks to be far improved for its in-game purposes.

Wow, the new Minecraft update looks so cool! I haven’t played this game in a few years but it is amazing to see the developments of the game to produce increasingly realistic representations of reality.

I am currently making Minecraft for one of my CIS classes and we work with a variety of noise functions and interpolate them together to form the terrain. Since the noise functions are very random, they are quite difficult to work with to get the desired result. It’s very impressive that the team is able to make the terrain more realistic than before.
