On December 17th, a new Spider-Man movie is slinging it’s way into theaters. This marks Tom Holland’s 3rd solo film as the wall-crawler and takes some extreme new directions. The new trailer teases some old foes from completely different universes. From Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin from the first Spider Man movie from 2002 to Jamie Foxx’s Electro from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will have to fight new villains that are completely foreign to him, but perhaps not to the viewers.

But when reintroducing old ideas, it is important to keep them fresh in order to keep viewers interested. Although these same villains and actors are returning, it looks like they have new designs, costumes, and twists in order to breathe new life into these old concepts. For example, we can see Green Goblin with new “razor bats” and a hooded appearance more akin to the comics, Electro with a yellow lighting and more human appearance, and Doc Ock with red metallic arms (after maybe absorbing nanotech from Peter’s old suit?).

It remains to be seen whether these will be enough to be fresh to viewers, or rather the nostalgia and fan service of these old characters must be enough to keep fans craving for more.

I am also very excited for Spider-man No Way Home! I think the whole aspect of breathing new life into characters by designing them in different ways is also really important. Excited to see the outcomes of the movie!
