On Spotify, I usually listen to the US Top 50 playlists and Singapore Top 20 playlists. Within in the last year, I noticed that a large majority on the charts are TikTok songs. I found this interesting article on how TikTok is changing what music is popular. “67% of the app’s users are more likely to seek out songs on music-streaming services after hearing them on TikTok, according to a November study conducted for TikTok.” It shows how TikTok is an integral platform for music marketing.

I have noticed this trend too but never really questioned it. Very interesting! Part of me thinks it’s because people actually prefer music they have already heard before (there was a study about people actually exhibiting a small stress response from listening to new music!). I also think this has to do with the fact that pop music is just that. It’s popular music. And if people are using it and advertising it, it is going to gain popularity and appeal.
