Last week, architect David Adjaye unveiled his proposal for his next project Manhattan: the Affirmation Tower. The skyscraper is immediately recognizable because of its unique shape and structure; the building would appear to be upside-down, with a narrow base that gets wider as you go up. The building would be the second tallest in the Western Hemisphere, with the tallest roof height of any building on this side of the planet. The building would be more than just an interesting addition to the NYC skyline; it would be the first building in the city to be developed and built by an all-Black team. The building will also be the headquarters for the NAACP’s mid-Manhattan branch, which contributes to the symbolic nature of the project. If completed as planned, the Affirmation Tower will be a physical and metaphorical beacon of diversity in the heart of New York City.
