As a native New Yorker, every year I greatly look forward to the reveal of each year’s Met Gala theme, as well as seeing my favorite celebrities walk up the Met steps in iconic and beautiful couture looks. Since the Met Gala had been postponed last year due to the pandemic, I was especially eager to see how every celebrity was going to interpret this year’s theme: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
I’m going to have to be honest and say that in my humble opinion, the majority of red carpet looks were a hit or miss with properly embodying the theme. (Although, maybe that is just because I feel like as a society, we have not seen a Met Gala as iconic and beautiful as the 2018 “Heavenly Bodies” Met Gala red carpet.) Nonetheless, there were definitely many standouts that I felt perfectly paid homage to the theme of America itself — from American designers to cultural and historical motifs.
The looks that I thought were most successful were both beautiful in their construction as well as also clear in the inspiration drawn from the theme of America. From the various fabrics, beading, silhouettes, and makeup/hair, there were quite a few standout looks of the night that resonated with me, as a lover of fashion and couture. I would like to share some of my personal favorites from the night below:

I have to agree that the Met Gala designs this year were extremely hit or miss, some being garishly unsubtle with messaging and others simply not being aesthetic. Your favorites were definitely really good, though.
