In honor of our “Tiny Sculptures” project, here’s a brief history of origami! 🙂
105 AD – Paper invented in China. Monks brought paper to Japan in sixth century.
Fun fact: initially when it first arrived in Japan, paper folding was only to be done for ceremonial purposes.
Edo period (1603 – 1868) – paper folding has become recreational and widespread (seen as a new form of art) .
1797 – Akisato Rito publishes first written instructions for paper folding called Sembazuru Orikata (“thousand crane folding”).
Paper folding also eventually spread to Europe (in particular, Spain)!
