While working on my Tiny Monuments project, I was very inspired by the movie Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl. It’s a great movie about a high schooler and his friend who has to fight against cancer. The final scene shows a longtime project made by one of the characters, who has made a book carving, where the pages of a book has been cut out to form a concave hole.
I think there is something so beautiful in how the pages have been cut, to form fluid lines and shapes. It reminds me of a mix between a topographical map and those “book-safes” in movies where the pages are cut out to store the murderer’s weapon. For my tiny monument, I wanted to create a scene within a book’s pages as well, riffing on the idea that a little universe can be contained within this space.
