Kent Monkman, Welcoming the Newcomers, 2019. Acrylic on canvas, 132 x 264 inches.

The artist behind this piece, Kent Monkman discusses his interpretation of how the indigenous people interacted with settlers and the world around them. As indigenous people, Kent Monkman believes the people are still in contact with other living things, and that connection was to facilitate a bond between the settlers. But sadly that idea of “bonding” was a delusion and colonialism was a project of white supremacy and the indigenous people are still feeling the effects today. This piece touches on that theme of kinship.
