Ukrainian Dancers, Edgar Degas

Institutions are becoming more committed to distinguishing between Russian and Ukrainian culture, and the world of art is contributing to this ongoing push.

The image above is located in the National Gallery in London. Originally titled “Russian Dancers,” the painting by Edgar Degas has been renamed to “Ukrainian Dancers.” While most of Degas’ work focuses on professional dancers, the painting features peasant dancers, characterized by their traditional folk costumes, long hair decorated by ribbons, and blue and yellow colors.

For a long time, titles and framing have been used to consolidate Russian influence, as seen in art and other cultural elements. The country of Russia has long appropriated elements of Ukrainian culture, but as of late, clearer distinctions are being made.
