ginger bread b sides,” 2021

This was a personal piece I did a few months ago during a 6 week artist’s residency in Charlotte. I’m currently trying to revisit the space I was in when I was making it and thought it might be a good idea to write out the process.

My friend makes music. They’re a real experimental type of person, and I really enjoy their stuff. I was just listening to the most recent album one night when this piece sort of hit me. I started sketching out a portrait of my friend, but remembered they wanted to stay relatively anonymous so as not to mingle their professional and musical careers. “It’s all about the music in the end,” my friend says, so expressing their sound visually became challenge. Taking bits and pieces from the lyrics, I drew out words and played around with fonts, throwing in little doodles and textures until I found a sense of equilibrium. The last piece, a yellow “ginger bread” laid on a near-black highlight background, was a reference to a conversation we had back when we were 17. Maybe I didn’t get it right. Maybe this isn’t the vibe they’re going for. But this is what I hear when I listen. Idk. It’s just a vibe piece, but I’m proud of it.
