One of my favourite artists is an Israeli painter and sculptor named David Gerstein. While he is well regarded in the art world, his aim is to be accessible to the public through his large-scale installations. He has a few recurring motifs, such as bikes, people, and butterflies, that look surreal and almost comical due to their bright and vibrant colours. From his many steel-cut figures, the one that stands out to me the most is ‘Endless Walk’ which has many people walking on an infinity sign, suggesting that time does not wait for anyone and once you start walking you cannot stop. Despite the slightly disheartening message, the bright colours of the work give it a positive spin, conveying that while daily life can be exhausting, it can also be happy as life is what we make of it.
