I’m from India, a country with thousands and thousands of art forms. My favourite, however, is Saanjhi, artwork made of intricate paper stencilling. Craftsmen use custom-made scissors in order to create the delicate patterns without tearing the thin paper. Typical Saanjhi works depict flowers, animals, or gods using geometric shapes and patterns. The craft was initially used to pay homage to Lord Krishna, but is now used for textile designs, home decor, lampshades, etc. What fascinates me is the evolution of Saanjhi from a religious symbol to functional household products, as it shows just how versatile and everlasting a design can be. The most amazing part of this art form is that such elaborate and beautiful designs can be created with just a paper and scissor!
