Growing up, we may have been told to never play with our food – but when it’s for the sake of design, it should totally be encouraged. Food plating is an art all on its own, as one must not only consider the aesthetics of a plate of food; the taste is even more important. Some ingredients, even if they would match the aesthetic of a plate, would clash with the foods’ tastes. This adds an extra dimension of complexity in this form of art – one must not only be a master of design, but also a culinary master to create a composition that both tastes good and looks good. I’ve included a video of some food plating fundamentals to show how complex and how many principles can go into a simple good-looking plate of food.
